THE STAG BEETLE KINGDOM
by Carol Kopp
Many of us have had special experiences with the nature kingdoms. One very special connection for me was with a very little known species. Probably not a lot of people know about Stag Beetles, and neither did I until I shared some ‘time’ with them a few years ago.
It was June 2002 when I first saw a Stag Beetle, I had opened the back door at my parents home where I was living at the time. I looked down to the ground and saw a strange looking insect waiting at the door and facing inwards, as if it had knocked on the door and was asking to come in. For some reason I connected with it immediately and could not just leave it there. I noticed that it looked as if it may be on it’s last legs and tried to figure out what to do. Now usually I am not quite so attentive to a sick looking insect but here I was wondering how I could help it out. After all, it had been waiting at the door for me.
I recognized it as a Stag Beetle due to it’s large “antlers” at the front. It was large for a beetle. For some reason I immediately chose to relate it to the Deer kingdom of which I have been very fond all my life and recognized it as some kind of mirror. I had begun reading the SSOA materials at that point and therefore was consciously looking for “mirrors” around me and especially at that time from the nature kingdoms. So this little creature did not move, it just stayed facing the door from the outside. My first thought was to move it, I didn’t think it would survive very long sitting in the pathway of human feet. I moved it to one side. It was alive but only moved enough for me to realize that was so. In the end I got a little box that it could sit in to shield it. I tried to cajole it to move, I later noticed it had wings. Why wasn’t it flying? I decided at that point that it must need sustenance. So I dripped some fresh water by it’s antlers and the antlers moved towards the water and then towards it’s mouth. Oh - this is working, I thought!
That night I sat there and gave it some healing, I used my hands to direct chi towards it. It seemed to really like it. For the next few days I would go outside and spend time with this sickly beetle. I even would dribble a mixture of coconut milk and whole milk yoghurt by it’s antlers. Lo and behold although it had been laying still, its antlers would move to the mixture and it appeared to be eating the concoction. I kept trying to move the beetle and at one point it looked almost as if he was going to fly but never did.
I was off up north on a holiday with my mum, and my dad was left with the ominous task of insect curer, after being asked to look after the stag beetle by his 35 year old daughter (me). Despite not being overly excited by my request, he said that he would indeed give it water and yoghurt if necessary as I had asked. I have made many trips North, however this was the first time we saw many herds of deer and many stags. We were thrilled that the deer kingdom was around us. Of course I equated it to the Stag Beetle somehow.
In one of the phone calls home my dad dropped the news to me that the beetle had passed. Again I wondered what my dad must have thought about having to break it to his 35 year old daughter that an insect had “passed”. My mum and myself both thought it was pretty good of him to have dealt with it in the first place, we saw the humor in it all, despite feeling a little sad about the mirror of the death of the little creature. I understood it was nature’s way that the insect had to go, and let it go from then on.
It was exactly a year later in 2003 and much had changed in my life since that time, however I was still at my parents, having stayed there a year. I had almost forgotten about the Stag Beetle and my experience caring for it. I opened the back door one evening, it was twilight. I heard this noise, like a clapping and buzzing sound. I looked up to the door as I stepped outside for some air and to enjoy the stillness of the garden, and there it was…my second encounter with the Stag Beetle, except this time it was flying high. It flew towards the door that it had been laying in front of exactly a year before and it flew high up the door and around the back of the house until eventually it flew over the house.
I was mesmerized by this strange creature. I counted back. Yes it was the anniversary of the previous Stag beetles’ presence. I heard the blessings. It was lovely. It said “See we remember each kind action, each loving deed. We know you willed to see us alive and here we are. We thank you for your gentleness with our kingdom. We are mirroring that with your own tender care towards yourself you are beginning again to come alive and fly! We wanted you to know we felt the love and came back to let you know that we are well.”
To me this was magic. The kingdom had returned to say thanks….wow! The lesson for me is that your kindness is not forgotten by the kingdoms. These things do not go unnoted. When you bless them, they will indeed bless you in return.
